New Book On The Minnesota Iceman

Many thanks to Patrick Huyghe of Anomalist Books for the review copy of what looks to be an excellent read! Arrived in the mail this afternoon...

Nessie Book News

Just received the uncorrected proofs of my forthcoming September 2016 book, Nessie.

Basically, this version of the book is a copy which I can make final changes to, before it goes to print.

The book focuses on the supernatural theories for the Nessies. If you share those views too, you will like it!

If you don't share those views, you will likely see your blood-pressure rise and your nose start bleeding...

Men in Black - In Indianapolis

Well, kind of!

This past weekend I was lecturing at the Indiana MUFON Conference, on my 2015 book Men in Black. There was a good turn-out, and here's an article promoting the gig, which was held in Indianapolis. A great couple of days! And below are a bunch of photos from the weekend:

Profiling Morgawr, The Sea Serpent

Here's how it begins...

In August 2010, Elizabeth Randall (an English author, good friend, and seeker of all-things weird) said that according to a sensational article that appeared in the pages of the British Daily Mail newspaper that same month, “…a picture has been circulating on the Internet purporting to show a sea monster that, so far seems to have eluded identification. It was seen off Saltern Cove, Devon, U.K., and has been dubbed by many as a ‘new Nessie.’ The image appears to show a greenish-brown, long-necked ‘something,’ with a reptilian-like head, that was trailing a shoal of fish just 30 yards offshore. According to reports the fish beached themselves just a few seconds later.”

Elizabeth continued: “The photo was sent to the Marine Conservation Society, who have still to decide exactly what it is. Although theories range from a sea serpent to a salt water crocodile. The lady who took the photograph at first thought that it might be a turtle but the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) says that not only do turtles not chase fish, but the description doesn’t fit.”

And here's where you can find the complete article...

A Wave Of UFOs In 1909

That's the subject of a new article from me at Mysterious Universe, and which starts as follows...

In 1909, the U.K. was hit by a strange wave of largely night-time encounters with what many might term UFOs. Particularly hard hit by the mysterious, aerial intruders was Wales. Brett Holman, who has extensively studied this issue, says in an excellent article: “On the night of 23 March 1909, a police constable named Kettle saw a most unusual thing: ‘a strange, cigar-shaped craft passing over the city’ of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. His friends were skeptical, but his story was corroborated, to an extent, by Mr Banyard and Mrs Day, both of nearby March, who separately saw something similar two nights later. In fact, these incidents were only the prelude to a series of several dozen such sightings throughout April and especially May, mostly from East Anglia and South Wales.”

In May of the same year, the London Standard newspaper told its readers that with “few exceptions” the witnesses described seeing “a torpedo-shaped object, possessing two powerful searchlights, which comes out early at night.” May 18, 1909 was the night on which one of the most amazing encounters occurred. A Mr. C. Lethbridge was walking to his Roland Street, Cardiff home, via the 271-meter-high Caerphilly Mountain. As he did so, Lethbridge was astonished by the sight of a cigar-shaped vehicle – in excess of forty-feet in length – which was sitting on the grass, at the edge of a mountain road. In his very own words…

The Flying "Thing" of Boston

What might that thing have been? Good question! Here's how my new article on "it" begins...

Now and again I’ll come across a story that isn’t just bizarre, but which is beyond bizarre. What follows is without doubt one of them. It’s the very curious saga of what became known as Boston’s “Flying black giant.” Yep, we’re talking about what are termed “Flying Humanoids.” Most people with an interest in all-things Fortean have heard of Mothman, of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Then, there’s the Owlman of Cornwall, England. And let’s not forget the flying woman of Da Nang. Boston’s own equivalent, however, is far less well known. But, arguably, it’s much weirder than all of the others combined.

The affair dates back to 1765, specifically to August 14. That was the date on which the Boston Gazette and Country Journal newspaper ran an article which told the very odd, breaking story. According to the newspaper, “A black cloud-like object approximating the shape of a human body hovered over Boston and remained until Sunset, and thousands saw it. At 7pm, the cloud landed, but quickly rose again and moved South only about twenty feet off the ground – down the main street, blowing a little vapor smoke intermixed with a few rapid sparks of electric fire, till it came before the Province House.”

"Endangered Species" - Reviewed

Over at Jim Harold's website, I review a certain 1982 movie on cattle-mutilations. Its title: Endangered Species. Here's how the article begins:

The world of Hollywood has always been quick to (a) pick up on what’s going on in the real world of unsolved mysteries of the conspiratorial and supernatural kind and (b) make use of those same mysteries in hit TV shows and mega-bucks movies. Take, for example, the 1994 movie, Roswell, starring Kyle MacLachlan and Martin Sheen. It’s a production that did a pretty good job of fictionalizing the world’s most famous UFO case. Then, there’s 1997’s Men in Black, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, a movie that brought the dark-suited silencers of Ufology to a new, huge audience. And, of course, there’s The X-Files, which weaved far more than a few well-known enigmas into its plotlines, including the Jersey Devil, lake monsters, and the world’s most famous, secret base, Area 51.

There is, however, one particularly sinister and enduring mystery that, for the most part, falls under Hollywood’s radar. Yes, it occasionally gets touched upon. Sometimes, it will get more than a few minutes of coverage. But, chiefly, it never gets the airtime that many might say it well deserves. You may be wondering what I’m talking about. Well, I’ll tell you: it’s the mysterious matter of so-called cattle mutilations.

And here's the link to the article.

New Book On The Minnesota Iceman

by Bernard Heuvelmans, Paul LeBlond (Translator), Loren Coleman (Afterword)
Trade Paperback, 284 Pages, 43 Illustrations
$22.95, ISBN: 9781938398612
Genre(s): Cryptozoology

NOW IN ENGLISH FOR THE FIRST TIME…
THE TRUE STORY OF THE MINNESOTA ICEMAN!

The story begins at the end of 1968 in New Jersey, when zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans and biologist Ivan Sanderson first hear from a correspondent about the frozen corpse of an extremely hairy man-like creature being exhibited in the Midwest. Upon arrival in Minnesota, the two scientists come face to face with a “hominid” not of our species embedded in a block of ice. An inquiry into the origin of the specimen triggers a bizarre adventure involving the FBI, the Smithsonian, the Mafia, the Vietnam War, drug smuggling, Hollywood, and a secretive millionaire, giving much of the account the flavor of a riveting detective story. What happened is told in meticulous detail by Heuvelmans, who draws a startling conclusion as to the Iceman’s nature based on a comparison of its anatomy with that of modern humans and fossil ancestors. But where Heuvelman’s scientific tale ends, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman’s begins, in a lengthy fact-filled afterword that brings this remarkable saga up-to-date.

About the Author:
Bernard Heuvelmans (1916-2001) was a Belgian-French zoologist, explorer, researcher, and a writer probably best known as “the Father of Cryptozoology.” His On the Track of Unknown Animals and In the Wake of Sea Serpents are regarded as two of the most influential works of cryptozoology. In 1975 Heuvelmans established the Center for Cryptozoology in France, and in 1982 he helped to found the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct) and served as its first president. In 1999, he donated his vast holdings and archives in cryptozoology to The Museum of Zoology of Lausanne in Switzerland.

Paul H. LeBlond is an ocean scientist with a long interest in cryptozoology. He was one of the founders of the International Society of Cryptozoology, and a co-founder of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club. LeBlond is an emeritus professor at the University of British Columbia, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. LeBlond is the author of Discovering Cadborosaurus and the translator from the French of The Asian Wild Man by Jean-Paul Debenat. LeBlond is the first President of the newly formed International Cryptozoology Society.
Loren Coleman has conducted fieldwork and research in cryptozoology since 1960, and is the author or contributor to over 100 popular books on cryptozoology, natural history mysteries, and the media, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America, Cryptozoology A to Z, and Tom Slick and the Search for the Yeti. For 20 years, he was an adjunct associate professor in documentary film and anthropology at six universities. He is the founder in 2003 and director of the nonprofit International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine, and a co-founder of the International Cryptozoology Society in 2016.

When UFO Evidence Goes "Missing"

That's the subject of another new article I have at Mysterious Universe. Here's the link, and here are the opening paragraphs:

There can be very few people within the field of UFO research who haven’t heard accounts of significant material on UFOs going “missing.” We’re talking about the likes of certain files on the Rendlesham Forest UFO event of 1980, and on the Roswell controversy of 1947. There’s also a very intriguing – but far less well-known – affair from the 1950s. It’s one that I have taken a personal interest in, but which still remains unresolved.

The late Ralph Noyes retired from the British Ministry of Defense in 1977. In an interview with UFO investigator Timothy Good, Noyes revealed that, back in the 1950s, the Royal Air Force had secured “gun-camera” footage of UFOs over the UK. The footage – seen by Noyes at the MoD in 1970, along with a dozen or so other individuals – wasn’t overly spectacular (Noyes described it as “unimpressive”). But, it certainly showed something anomalous and fast-moving. Noyes (whose account you can find in Good’s 1987 book, Above Top Secret) confirmed that he saw the footage while in the employ of the MoD, as did representatives from the Meteorological Office, the Director of Air Defense, and a number of personnel from the Air Staff. A theory was offered that the phenomenon may have been “something obscure meteorologically.”

Bigfoot Bodies...

There's a new article from me on the enduring (but controversial) story of dead Bigfoot on Mount St. Helens. Here's how it starts:

On May 18, 1980, a devastating natural disaster created an entirely new landscape across a specific portion of Washington State. We are talking about the eruption of Mount St. Helens, which killed more than four dozen people, as well as thousands of wild animals. Within the domain of cryptid ape investigations there are longstanding rumors that the calamitous event also took the lives of more than a few Bigfoot, something which, allegedly, elements of the U.S. Government and military sought to keep under wraps. The government’s U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says of the Mount St. Helens disaster:

“With no immediate precursors, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred at 8:32 a.m. on May 18, 1980 and was accompanied by a rapid series of events. At the same time as the earthquake, the volcano’s northern bulge and summit slid away as a huge landslide—the largest debris avalanche on Earth in recorded history. A small, dark, ash-rich eruption plume rose directly from the base of the debris avalanche scarp, and another from the summit crater rose to about 200 m (650 ft) high. The debris avalanche swept around and up ridges to the north, but most of it turned westward as far as 23 km (14 mi) down the valley of the North Fork Toutle River and formed a hummocky deposit. The total avalanche volume is about 2.5 km3 (3.3 billion cubic yards), equivalent to 1 million Olympic swimming pools.”

Hummel Park Terror...

A cool new article from good friend Jen Devillier, which you can find here, and which begins as follows:

"Located in Omaha, Nebraska; this is one of the scariest places I’ve ever visited. During the day it seems very benign and like a normal park. However at night, the feeling is VERY different.  I’ve been to this park a handful of times and each time, I had experiences. In this article, I will share with you what I’ve experienced at this terrifying park in the heart of Nebraska..."

The Roswell UFO and the "Ramey Memo"

An interesting new article from Kevin Randle on Roswell and what has become known as "The Ramey Memo."

Here's how it starts, in Kevin's own words:

"Since it has come up in the discussions here a couple of times, I thought I would identify that high-power government lab that was supposedly involved in an effort to decrypt the Ramey Memo. According to Colonel Richard Weaver, who answered my question about it without reservation, it was the National Photographic Interpretation Center which was part of the CIA back in 1994. I filed a FOIA request with them and received a fairly rapid response."
