Original Texas Bigfoot Gig - Reviewed

This past weekend I was at the annual Original Texas Bigfoot Conference, a cool event which I have reviewed for Mysterious Universe. You can find the article here, and below is an extract and a few photos from the gig:

"On Friday, October 9 I traveled from my Arlington, Texas home to the town of Jefferson for the annual Original Texas Bigfoot Conference. It’s an event organized by Craig Woolheater of Cryptomundo. Like me, most of the other speakers (Ken Gerhard, Lyle Blackburn, John Kirk, and Chester Moore) arrived on the Friday afternoon. A couple of hours later we strolled down to a nearby restaurant, along with around 50 or 60 conference attendees. As well as chowing down on some fine Mexican food, me and Ken gave an approximately thirty-minutes-long overview on the matter of the strange creatures of Texas.

"That included the legendary, near-Fortean 'Goat-Man' that provoked havoc, hysteria and excitement in the summer of 1969. It was a large, rampaging humanoid which was seen late at night in and around the woods of Lake Worth, Texas. The creature was variously described as scaly, cloven-hoofed, and even with horns on its head – hence the name. As we noted, however, since those long gone days, suggestions have been made that the beast was a wandering, white Bigfoot. An equally odd scenario!"

Monster Hunters - In Print

Received in the mail today, a review-copy of Tea Krulos' just-published book, Monster Hunters: On the Trail with Ghost Hunters, Bigfooters, Ufologists, and Other Paranormal Investigators.

I'll be reviewing it at Mysterious Universe next week.

Of me and several Texas-based good friends in the field of creature-seeking, Krulos says:

"[Lyle] Blackburn is a part of a certain Texas school of cryptozoology that includes his colleagues Ken Gerhard, British transplant Nick Redfern, and Cryptomundo blog founder, Craig Woolheater. They are a little bit more metal than your average cryptozoologist."

Published by Chicago Review Press, it looks to be a good read!

The Boggy Creek Festival

A few photos from yesterday's Boggy Creek Festival in Arkansas, with various friends and colleagues, including Ken Gerhard, Tom Shirley, Christy Newhouse, Lyle Blackburn, Sandy Blackburn, Craig Woolheater, and Larry Parks. There were lots of cool lectures (all on various aspects of the Bigfoot mystery), plenty to eat and drink, and a good time was had by all!

Texas Bigfoot Gig - Reviewed

Over at Mysterious Universe, there's a mini-review from me of this past weekend's Original Texas Bigfoot Conference (see yesterday's post at this blog for photos from the event).

You can find it here, and it begins like this:

"On Friday, September 17, I drove from my Arlington, Texas home to Jefferson, Texas, where I was due to speak the following morning at the Original Texas Bigfoot Conference. It was an event organized by Craig Woolheater (of Cryptomundo), and which saw a number of good, intriguing presentations, and a crowd of almost 200 people. And a great time was had by one and all.

"Most of the speakers rolled into town late on the Friday afternoon. As well as me, they included Lyle Blackburn (author of Lizard Man and The Beast of Boggy Creek) and Ken Gerhard (who penned Big Bird! and Encounters with Flying Humanoids). Also there were John Kirk (who wrote the excellent In the Domain of the Lake Monsters) and Rob Riggs (of In the Big Thicket)."

Cryptomundo Merchandise

For those who may be interested, Craig Woolheater has a line of merchandise to promote his website, www.cryptomundo.com, including a Mothman t-shirt with the words "Cryptomundo" written across it.

Since I have no shame and never say no to free black t-shirts, I agreed to promote it here, there and everywhere!

Check out Craig's site for all the cool info!

The Weirdest Museum...

This past weekend I was lecturing down at the Austin, Texas-based Museum of the Weird, along with good friends and authors Ken Gerhard (Big Bird! and Monsters of Texas) and Lyle Blackburn (The Beast of Boggy Creek).

I drove down with good mate Craig Woolheater of Cryptomundo, and also met up with (for the first time) David Coleman, author of The Bigfoot Filmography book - definitely essential reading for anyone wanting a comprehensive study of Bigfoot in films and TV.

David discussed his book, as did Lyle, while I spoke about Britain's legendary "Man--Monkey" and Ken focused on weird flying man-beasts. And it was followed by dinner, then a showing of the 1976 film, The Creature of Black Lake, and, finally, drinks at a local bar.

Anyway, a good time was had by all, and here's a few photos from the event...
